The River Wey is a tranquil waterway running for nearly 20 miles through the heart of Surrey, and is in the care of the National Trust. This truly delightful river is one of Surrey’s best kept secrets and the Farncombe Boathouse is a stones throw away from my new home in Godalming, Surrey.
The town of Godalming has existed since Saxon times, and probably earlier. The name itself has Saxon origins, ‘Godhelms Ingus’ roughly translated as “the family of Godhelm”, and probably referring to one of the first lords of the manor.
There are flower-strewn water meadows in the summer and soon the colours of autumn are really going to be brought to life on the river. And, I’m told that in spring woods full of kingcups and bluebells.
I’m looking forward to exploring my new community, making new friends and getting to know Surrey a lot better. Looking around, there is a lot to see and do in this beautiful part of the world. If you know of any interesting places to photograph in the area, please feel free to get in touch via my contact page. I’d love to hear from you.
